The Don Emilio is a tribute to Dr. Oscar Rodriguez’s father, Emilio. GTO’s original blend used five-year-aged proprietary Dominican tobacco, while the current GTO listing identifies the Don Emilio as a 10-year-aged version, so I’m treating your five-year Ultra Premium as the earlier formulation.
Flavor Profile
First Third
The cigar opens with cream, cedar, black pepper and natural tobacco sweetness. The Connecticut Shade portions of the perfecto create a softer, creamy beginning, while the pepper gives it just enough edge.
Second Third
Once the Dominican wrapper takes over, the profile changes noticeably. Cream gives way to richer natural tobacco, cedar and sweet spice, with white pepper remaining on the retrohale. This is where the cigar really starts showing its complexity.
Final Third
The final third gets considerably richer: cedar, natural tobacco, cocoa, coffee and pepper come forward. The strength builds toward medium-full/full, but the cigar maintains its balance rather than becoming harsh.
Construction & Burn
The 6 x 54 perfecto is an important part of the experience. The segmented wrapper creates a progression rather than giving you the same flavor profile from beginning to end. The draw is excellent, with strong smoke production once the Dominican wrapper section is reached.
Overall Experience
The GTO Don Emilio is one of those cigars where the experience changes dramatically as you smoke it. You essentially get a creamy, lighter opening followed by a richer Dominican puro-style experience. It’s complex, distinctive and definitely not your typical Dominican cigar.
