The L40 is one of the more distinctive members of the Único Serie. The 40-ring-gauge lancero format was specifically developed to give the blend more tobacco than a traditional 38-ring lancero, allowing Drew Estate to build considerably more complexity into the cigar.
The Experience
This is a slow-burning, concentrated Liga. The narrow ring gauge puts a lot of emphasis on the wrapper and creates a very direct flavor experience.
Expect a combination of dark earth, leather, espresso, cocoa, black pepper and rich tobacco sweetness, with the profile becoming increasingly layered as the cigar progresses.
First Third
The opening comes in with pepper, espresso, dark wood and leather.
There is a roasted quality underneath it, almost like dark coffee and charred oak. The Habano wrapper gives the cigar a little more brightness than you might expect from the Liga Privada name, while the core remains earthy and powerful.
Second Third
This is where the L40 really starts showing its complexity.
Cocoa and coffee become more pronounced, with leather and earth still driving the profile. A subtle creaminess begins to round out the smoke, and there can be moments of sweetness underneath the heavier flavors.
The pepper doesn’t disappear, but it becomes more integrated rather than simply aggressive.
Final Third
The final third gets darker, warmer and more intense.
Leather, espresso, charred wood, earth and pepper move to the front, with the sweetness becoming more restrained. If smoked slowly, the cigar can maintain a surprising amount of balance despite the increase in intensity.
This is definitely a cigar where slowing down improves the experience.
Construction & Burn
The L40’s 40-ring gauge is intentional. It is thicker than a traditional 38-ring lancero, giving the cigar enough internal tobacco to support the complex blend.
When properly rolled and stored, it can deliver a long, slow burn with a very concentrated draw. The long format also makes this more of a sit-down cigar rather than something you rush through.
Overall Experience
The L40 is Liga Privada with a little more finesse.
It has the dark, earthy DNA people expect from the brand, but the lancero format makes the wrapper and transitions much more noticeable. It’s powerful without simply being a pepper bomb.
Why It Stands Out
The big thing here is the 40 ring gauge.
Drew Estate essentially built the cigar around the idea of creating a lancero that could carry a more complex blend. That’s why the L40 doesn’t smoke like a conventional skinny cigar.
And because Único Serie cigars are individual micro-blends, the L40 has its own identity within the Liga Privada family.
Pairing Suggestions
Espresso: Brings out the coffee and cocoa.
Black coffee: Excellent with the darker roasted notes.
Aged rum: Highlights the sweetness and earth.
Bourbon: Works beautifully with the leather, oak and spice.
Burnt Leaf Insight
This is not a cigar you smoke because you want a big ring gauge and a massive smoke output. You smoke the L40 because you want to slow down and taste what Drew Estate can do with a lancero.
The 7 × 40 format, dark Habano wrapper and layered Liga profile make this a cigar that belongs in a serious boutique humidor.
Burnt Leaf takeaway: Small ring gauge. Big Liga attitude.
