The Machinist Magnum (5 ¼ × 54) by Luciano:

Specs & Release Info

  • The Machinist line is offered in three regular production sizes: Magnum (5 ¼ × 54), Toro (6 × 52), and Gordo (6 × 60).
  • The blend / construction is shared across the line:
     • Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés viso
     • Binder: Ecuadorian Sumatra viso + Indonesian Sumatra
     • Filler: Tobaccos from Pennsylvania, the Dominican Republic, and South Africa
  • The cigars are manufactured in an undisclosed factory in the Dominican Republic.

Expected Flavor & Experience (Inferred / Based on Peer Vitolas)

While I didn’t find a full standalone review of the Magnum vitola, the flavors and behavior described in reviews of the Toro version provide good guidance and are likely close to what you’d see in the Magnum (with the slightly smaller gauge possibly emphasizing more intensity of certain notes).

From the Toro review (which shares the blend):

  • Early: pepper (especially on the retrohale), earthiness, subtle sweetness, cocoa undertones
  • Mid: deeper spice, roasted nut notes, leather / cedar touches, fuller earth tones
  • Final third: lingering pepper & spice, earth, leather deepen, and complexity holds
  • Strength: medium to medium-full

Given the Magnum’s 5 ¼ × 54 format, you may see:

  • Slightly more concentrated delivery of flavors (due to the tighter ring gauge relative to a Gordo)
  • Slightly faster ramping of strength and spice
  • Possibly a bit less “cushioning” in the later third (i.e. less mellowing)
  • Still expected to maintain balance and the signature flavor set of the line (bread / cocoa / spice / subtle sweetness)
